Rare Earth Magnets: The Strongest Magnets Available

Rare earth magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnets available, and are made from alloys of rare earth elements. The two main types of rare earth magnets are neodymium magnets and samarium cobalt magnets. Rare earth magnets typically produce a magnetic field of up to and exceeding 1.4 teslas—comparatively, ferrite and ceramic magnets tend to exhibit fields between 0.5 and 1 tesla. The intense strength of rare earth magnets makes them very desirable for many applications, and allows them to achieve performance levels other magnets simply cannot reach.

Neodymium Magnets Deliver Incredible Strength for Diverse Applications

Neodymium magnets were invented in the 1980s and are composed of an alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron (NdFeB). They are the strongest magnet available, having both the highest magnetic field strength as well as a high coercivity, which makes them magnetically stable. To resist corrosion, neodymium magnets are typically plated with nickel (although other coatings are sometimes used). Neodymium magnets are used in many applications where a strong, compact permanent magnet is required. These applications can range from electric motors to door catches, hard disk drives, jewelry clasps, toys, magnetic separation equipment, and more. These powerful magnets are an essential component of our everyday lives, but their compact size is why most people never notice their presence.

Samarium Cobalt Magnets: Power that Resists Heat and Corrosion

The first family of rare earth magnets to be invented were samarium cobalt magnets. They have a lower magnetic field strength compared to neodymium magnets, which are the strongest magnets in terms of raw power, but their composition lends them unique features that neodymium magnets lack. Samarium cobalt magnets have a higher Curie temperature compared to neodymium magnets, meaning they can tolerate higher operating temperatures before they lose their permanent magnetic properties. Samarium cobalt magnets are also highly resistant to corrosion and oxidation. Because of this, samarium cobalt magnets are typically favored over neodymium magnets in applications that demand high field strength at high operating temperatures, as well as applications where potential corrosion is a concern (such as marine boating applications).
