What are Alnico Magnets?
Alnico magnets are primarily composed of aluminum (Al), nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co), and thus are called Al-ni-co magnets. Sometimes copper and titanium are infused. Alnico magnets are ferromagnetic, and have a high coercivity. They’re also used to make permanent magnets. Before rare earth magnets came along, alnico magnets were the strongest type of magnet available.
The only magnets stronger than Alnico magnets fall in the rare earth family- including neodymium and samarium-cobalt magnets. They’re anisotropic, which means they have a preferred orientation of magnetization, or direction.
Properties of Alnico Magnets:
- High melting point
- Useful magnetism even when heated red-hot
- Considered one of the most stable magnets available
Alnico magnets are made using the casting or sintering processes, and are widely used in industrial and consumer applications. Some examples of how alnico magnets are used include electric motors, electric guitar pickups, microphones, sensors, and cow magnets.
